Hello DIY’ers, for this project I wish I could say I thought it up on my own but I can’t take credit. A friend of mine sent me a picture of a sort of body pillow is the best description; it looks like a snake, hence the title of my post ‘Boa Pillow’. It was so cute, and kids can snuggle up to in the car so they can feel extra comfy on a long car ride and hopefully their head isn’t flopped over. I would use this for toddlers and older kids.
For the sake of nostalgia, and simplicity, a gently used baby blanket is great for this project. The baby blanket works well because the edging is already there and it has a material you know your child will like plus it’s gentle on their skin. The dimensions of this baby blanket are 32X36”. The pillow dimensions are 30” long and 8”wide (cut fabric wider to allow for sewing). I doubled the fabric that would sit along the body just to make it more cushioned.
First, we measure 8 inches in width, chalk it off the length of the blanket. Next, decide where you want to place the Velcro strip on the top of the blanket. This strip will fit around the car seat shoulder strap in order to rest the pillow next to your child’s head. I made a flap out of excess blanket to affix the Velcro so that it wouldn’t rub on the child’s skin, Velcro can be itchy >:|
Fold the cut fabric in half lengthwise, and then sew. Turn it inside out and stuff it with your organic raw cotton. Make sure the stuffing gets into the bottom corners for the blanket but careful not to overstuff, you want a huggable pillow. Honestly you can use polyfill, I just like the smell and fluffiness of the cotton stuffing, and I prefer more natural products when they are available and practical. Then close it up with your needle and thread, sew simple!! (ha-ha).
