The Yogurt Experiment

This posts title may sound curious but it is just me trying out different yogurts.  For the past year I have been having Siggi’s vanilla yogurt with trail mix, I usually buy Wellesley Farms brand, brown sugar, and cinnamon for breakfast.  I really like Siggi’s, it is a little thick but always tasty but I want a little variety so decided to try out other brands.  I am particular about yogurt, I do not like the taste of artificial sugar and prefer more natural yogurt.

Monday I tried Chobani Greek yogurt with vanilla, 0% milk fat and 110 calories.  The calorie count would come out to a little more because I add trail mix and cinnamon to my yogurt but I don’t count how many calories the trail mix adds because it’s not much.  This Chobani Greek yogurt is made from only natural ingredients, and no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.  I first tasted it by itself and found it a little sweet but I wouldn’t need to add any sugar which is good.  It was not as thick as other greek yogurt I had and I can only guess that is because it is 0% milk fat.  I enjoyed it with the cinnamon and trail mix but I think if I were to buy it again I would try to find one that is not 0% milk fat.

Tuesday I had Skyr Icelandic Provisions yogurt with vanilla, 1.5% milk fat and it was 120 calories. Again I add trail mix and cinnamon to my yogurt.  I really liked Skyr, and for me the taste alone was better than the Chobani, now I don’t know if that’s because the milk fat content made it more the consistency I prefer, it was creamy which I liked and not too thick but not too thin. It’s made with natural cane sugar, so far in the week this was my favorite.

Wednesday time for Silk Dairy-Free yogurt with vanilla, now for those that don’t know I have a little lactose intolerance, it tends to act up from cheeses or ice cream, usually I am okay with yogurt.  I wanted to test this yogurt alternative made with soy because it’s nice to give your stomach a break and still get the probiotics from yogurt.  For a yogurt alternative it was pretty good, but looking at the ingredients it has more things listed so maybe too processed, because it’s made from soy the consistency wasn’t creamy.  For those that like vanilla it may be great because you can really taste the vanilla flavor. I could see this being a nice little snack for someone who has allergies to milk/cream but can have soy.

Thursday was FAGE plain greek strained yogurt with 5% milk fat and was 190 calories.  There is a parchment paper when you first open the lid, if I had read the side of the container I would have realized sooner instead of hitting it with my spoon, was a funny little moment.  This was a nice simple yogurt with a creamy texture.  It tasted good plain and the sugar that’s in it is naturally occurring from the milk so there’s no additives.  Like the others I first tasted it plain and then added my trail mix with added cinnamon, I like thicker yogurts so for me this one is great.  I can also see it being perfect for smoothie recipes or other recipes, maybe even dip.  I may have to experiment with that another time.  If anyone knows any good recipes with yogurt feel free to share :)

I went back to my Siggis on Friday as my baseline, to see how it compares now that I tried all the others.  It’s also 0% milkfat which I mever noticed and was 110 calories. I found it’s a little more tart that the rest when eaten alone but with my trusty trail mix and cinnamon it was as good as always.  If I want to change up my breakfasts now and then I would choose Skyr and FAGE.
